First, you must do your homework, so to speak.  Keep a journal of family member’s names, phone numbers, and address’.  
Next compile all that you know about your family and ancestors.  Decide how far you want to go.  Great-Great Grandma and Grandpa? Once you start finding information about them, you may find earlier photos, records and memorabilia that you didn’t know still existed (Grandma Betty forgot that they were in the attic). 
Interview relatives and possibly family friends who may remember people, places, and the like (keep notes in your journal).  Ask for photos from everyone and make high quality copies using the Kodak Picture Maker for about 6.99/sheet.
Or, family and friends may allow you to keep them to preserve for everyone to share.  Keep all photos, records, memorabilia, and your journal in a safe place.  You will need to also keep them well organized.  You can do this chronologically, by family, or by individual (if you have enough information).  You can use manila envelopes and plastic bins.  Don’t forget to label them.
 Next, I would transfer the notes from your journal to large lined index cards. Attach these cards to each folder.  When storing, make sure that if they are moved or shifted, that items inside will not be bent, etc…

However, when you add variety to your album or mixtape, you’re bound to make a much better impact on the listener, especially if it’s combined with originality.  Think about it the next time you listen to an album or mixtape, or even more… think about the last album or mixtape you listened to.  If you listen to dirty south music, would you want to hear a 14 track album of the same exact feel or content?  What about if you’re listening to a rap music album, or a hip hop music album or mixtape?  Would you want every single track to be about the same subject, and have the same kind of feel on the hip hop beats or instrumentals used?  I’m sure you wouldn’t.  That’s where the need for a variety of content comes in.  If you’re a rap artist and making a rap album, you would be wise to have most of your songs on the rap album to possibly be of a grimey and “thugged out” nature for a rap album, but yet still want a few songs to sound different from the rest for that added variety.  Some rappers and singers have forgotten this over the years.  Just as people say about keeping sex spicy, the same applies for music albums and mixtapes as well.  Keep the content new and exciting, and unique if possible.

Another thing to keep in mind is selection of the right beats or instrumentals for your album or mixtape.  No one wants to hear an instrumental that doesn’t fit with the flow or vibe of the song, or the album as a whole.  Making sure to choose the proper beats is key.  If you’re making a hip hop music album, don’t flood your album with a bunch of R&B instrumentals.  Instead, look for something that fits the flow of your song, and then possibly select that instrumental.  For instance, if you’re making a hip hop music album, find a majority of your hip hop beats to have that hip hop sound, but yet keep them from sounding the same to one another.  Some similarity is okay if you do something creative with it, but try to have no instrumentals sound the same.  Some people make this mistake especially with a dirty south music album.  All tracks sound similar to one another, including the lyrics, which gets boring fast, and discarded in less than a month.  No artist wants this to happen to their album or mixtape.  That said, the beats and instrumentals should be kept unique and with enough variety that no two beats sound alike even if a couple come somewhat close.

As well as a variety of instrumentals, there should be a variety of lyrics.  As an artist, you don’t want to use the same phrases from one song on another song on the same album.  Too repetitive equals too flat, and ready for the trash.  Make sure that you have a decent variety of lyrics, even if you’re not necessarily the lyricist type.  Saying a three word phrase like “make ‘em bang” should only be used with one or at the most, two of the tracks on the same album.  Don’t use the same phrase throughout your entire track as though no one’s tired of hearing the phrase and tone over and over, or you may find your song facing retirement sooner than you think.  Bottom line, keep the lyrics fresh, unique, and clear.

Finally, without question, the quality should be clear, and the lyrics clear enough to hear.  You woiuld also want to insure that the instrumentals or beats in the background can still be heard some of the way as well.  The vocals should be over the instrumental, but the entire mix of the song should still allow you to hear the beat being used.  The clearer the song, the better your chances of marketing.  You don’t want anyone listening to a muddy song.  Do your best to polish the songs or album completely.

And I can see that it is a question we are all asking again.

And if you expanded this question it might sound something like this… “How could someone so talented, so gifted, so powerfully able to touch human beings have come to this?” And the very way that we were touched by Elvis Presley and later by Michael Jackson seems to indicate a depth of humanity in both that is starkly contradicted by their behavior.

And in those torn homes as in our ‘nation-home’ we see aberrant and criminal behaviors like those of Michael Jackson. And in those torn homes as in our ‘nation home’ we see loose cannon behaviors like those of Elvis Presley. And in those torn homes, as in our ‘nation-home’, we hang on for the greatness, and recoil from the depravity. And in those torn homes, as in our nation home, there is one common denominator…the existence of a drug addict, alcoholic, or substance abuser. And now we uncover what is very probably the same common denominator in Michael Jackson in his abuse of prescription drugs.

As an educator in the field of addiction, I pray for the day that we truly understand that drugs and alcohol affect the very way that human beings think. I hope we will someday see that each and every drug, including alcohol, affects the functioning of the human brain in a multitude of ways. And when a person is on drugs and alcohol, he or she cannot be trusted to follow the rules of conscience or values. And the longer the person has been taking drugs or alcohol, the less conscience and values we will see. And as the drugging or drinking progresses, there comes a time when a person’s behavior and thinking goes 100% opposite to common values, common sense, and even common human feeling. And there even comes a time when the person’s thinking is so askew that he or she will justify the commission of atrocities and crimes even when the drug is not present.

I was a lover of Elvis as much as many of you are lovers of Michael. As such I am sometimes guiltily thankful that the king died before he could reconcile himself to doing something worse than shooting out a television set. I never would have wanted to see atrocity coming from the man who brought tears to my eyes when he sang words like…

“If I can dream of a better land, where all my brothers walk hand in hand, tell me why can’t that dream come true.”

And yet I have a fear that regardless of Michael and regardless of Elvis, we as a people will go merrily along on our well-worn path, drinking and drugging our way to our own personal versions of Neverland. We will continue to use prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, alcohol, illicit and illegal drugs, club drugs, and some of us will even suck on aerosol cans or drink rubbing alcohol to alter our brains and get high. And we will believe with all of our hearts that what happened to the King of Rock and Roll and what happened to the King of Pop will never happen to us. We will believe that we will never become like them. We will believe that we alone are impervious to the affects of drugs and alcohol on our minds. We will believe like Elvis believed and like Michael believed- thereby creating our own real-world version of “Thriller Night.”
